Studies
University: Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium

Department: Sciences, section Chemistry
Results: a: July 1976: Masters degree in Chemistry
Performance: cum laude
b: January 1980: Doctoral degree: Ph.D. in Sciences (Chemistry)
Performance: magna cum laude

Ph.D. thesis topics: Main dissertation: "A Study of the Elementary Reactions Occurring in the Oxidation Process of Acetylene with Oxygen Atoms."
Additional dissertation: "The Formation of the Solar System was Triggered by a Supernova Explosion."

Professional functions
July 1976 till January 1980: Research fellowship from IWONL (Institute for Scientific Research in Industry and Agriculture)

December 1980 till June 1985: Research Chemist at the Du Pont de Nemours R&D laboratories, Mechelen, Belgium

From June 1985 on: Staff Researcher, Project Leader and Project Manager at the "Materials Science and Engineering", "Energy" and “Remote Sensing” departments of SCK and VITO respectively (centres for applied research), Mol, Belgium

Professional experience

In the R&D laboratory of Du Pont de Nemours, I was active with the "Polymer coatings" section on the development of (mainly) Teflon formulations. The task not only consisted of research, but also of customer support and trouble-shooting for the production and sales departments.

At SCK (Nuclear Research Centre) I did contract research on the subject of corrosion and corrosion protection of nuclear waste equipment, till March 1991. This corrosion related research focused on the qualification of candidate container materials for the geological disposal of vitrified high level radioactive waste.

In April 1991, I started working at VITO (the Flemish Institute for Applied Research) in the field of global environmental research, mainly on subjects related to Climate Change and the Stratospheric Ozone Layer. In 1998 the “Remote Sensing” department decided to invest in innovative techniques, both from the operational and the thematic application development point of view. This development traject was entrusted to me and resulted gradually in a portfolio of projects. As a matter of consequence, my activities shifted from mere Research and Development towards Project management and Account management, included lobbying at the national and international instances involved.

As my managerial skills improved, I was appointed Project Manager of the Low Resolution Satellite groups of the “Remote Sensing” department and am steering now three groups of 35-40 persons in total, involved in research, development and operations respectively. Needless to say that my activities shifted even more towards people management, performance review, budget control, recruitment and active lobbying to acquire projects in those domains where my Project Groups can benefit and grow.
