Message from the Editor in Chief
The Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), formerly
known as Kigali Institute of Science, Technology and Management,
was the first technological institute of higher learning in Rwanda.
It was established in 1997 with a clear mandate to produce technical
and scientific expertise of high caliber. KIST’s mandate,
as laid down in its Statute, is comprehensive and wide in scope.
It includes promotion of research based on the disciplines offered
at KIST, and to disseminate the results of research through teaching,
seminars, conferences, public lectures, publications and other
appropriate means.
Currently the Institute has three faculties, namely, Applied Science,
Engineering, and Architecture and Environmental Design. KIST Journal
of Science and Technology (KJST) was established in 2011 by the
Directorate of Research and Publication of KIST to meet the need
to promote research and publish the results in science and technology.
The university is not only a custodian of knowledge but also a
generator of (new) knowledge that influence people how they think,
feel, act and do their business. Research and publications are
the most important things that distinguish universities from each
other and other related institutions. The university is a place
where an academic staff distinguishes oneself by his/her work
which will be judged by his/her peers; in academia you either
publish or perish.
The KJST is a multidisciplinary publication with a core mission
to publish peer reviewed basic and applied scientific research
papers in the broad areas of sciences, mathematics, technology,
architecture and environmental design. The Journal publishes four
types of scientific contributions; full length research papers,
short communications, reviews and feature articles.
The Journal welcomes submission of manuscripts from all over the
world which meet the general criteria of significance and scientific
excellence. KJST envisaged future is to be continue to improve
the quality of the coming issues through expansion of its Editorial
Board by inviting world-class reviewers, increasing publication
frequency from 1 to 4 volumes per year through electronic publications
prior to hard copy print issues, publishing articles that serve
the national, regional and international interests. Once the KJST
journal is established and has a track record of timely publication
and solid content,
we shall have the Journal indexed and abstracted. To be recognized
as an authoritative, high-quality source of information, a journal
must be widely available. Indexing and abstracting services facilitate
the broadest dissemination of information by pointing researchers
to articles that are relevant to the field. KJST is an Open Access
Journal. One key request of researchers across the world is unrestricted
access to research publications. Open access gives a worldwide
audience larger than that of any subscription-based journal and
thus increases the visibility and impact of published works. It
also enhances indexing, retrieval power and eliminates the need
for permissions to reproduce and distribute content. KJST is fully
committed to the Open Access Initiative and will provide free
access to all articles as soon as they are published.
In KJST Volume 1, Issue 1 has 9 articles from the basic in the
broad areas of sciences, mathematics, technology, GIS, architecture
and environmental design from many countries as well in line with
the vision of KJST. The coming issues are expected to be more
vibrant as we strive to improve the journal publications quality.
Our motto is to transform the KJST into high impact international
journal. We are requesting researchers worldwide to submit worthy
manuscripts to KJST and also, upon request, to willingly peer-review
articles in their areas of specialization in time. I hope you
will consider KIST Journal of Science and Technology (KJST) for
your next submission. Lastly we wish you an enjoyable KJST read.
