KIST Career Guidance and Counseling Center was established in 2002 under the Directorate of Students’ Services with an overall objective “to empower the KIST Students with life skills and strategies along side their formal education that will enable them to make constructive, informed personal decisions leading to healthy behavior and to individual development”. It started Voluntary counseling and Testing in 2005 and since then a large number of students and staff have been tested in the center, at an average of 520 clients per year. The main areas of intervention are; HIV/AIDS Programme, Mental Health Programme and Academic & Career Guidance Programme.
HIV/AIDS Programme
Provide HIV/AIDS Voluntary, Confidential Counseling and Testing (VCT) for both Students and Staff; Annually, organize a sensitization week to respond to HIV and AIDS; it includes cultural, sports public lectures events in order to provide accurate HIV/AIDS related information and education for behavior change;
Produce and distribute leaflets and posters in collaboration with KIST Anti-AIDS Club “The LIGHT” and other KIST Students Associations; Provide people living with HIV with psychosocial support; Make condoms available for self service and free of charge in students hostel and in different toilets at KIST; Establish, train and supervise peer educators group
b)Mental Health Programme
Provide individual counseling to students and staff with psychological concerns; Provide group counseling to student groups in need of psychological help; Establish, train and supervise Peer Trauma Care Volunteers groups; Carry out psychological intervention during April National mourning week.
c) Career Guidance Programme
Provide students with individual and group academic counseling (study skills such as goal setting, time management, self-assessment, techniques to get sustainable concentration, memory improvement techniques, etc).
Provide students with individual and group career counseling (employability skills such as job hunting techniques, how to write a successful covering letter and CV, techniques to succeed job interviews, etc).
In the future it is planned to re-start career development, public lectures and graduates placement, organize career days and fairs, establish, train and supervise Peer Career Advisors, equip the center with career development materials.
