Head of Architecture Department

 

Garret Gantner holds a BSc in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and an M.Arch from Yale University.

He has been with the faculty since the inaugural running of classes in 2009, and has subsequently co-authored the structure and content of much of the curriculum in the Department of Architecture. Prior to joining KIST, he worked with Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, an internationally renowned architecture firm, and was a teaching assistant at Yale.

In addition to his work at KIST, Garret is currently a Project Manager at MASS Design Group, an organization devoted to design for social justice.

At MASS, he managed the construction of Butaro Hospital in northwestern Rwanda, a project that has received widespread acclaim, including a nomination for Health Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival, and was named Medical Building of the Year by Contract Magazine (2011).

He has also managed the design of numerous other health facilities in Rwanda. Garret's design work has been published in Yale's annual design journal (2007), he has exhibited furniture design at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (2008), and has published research on African urbanism (2009).
