Bachelor of Architecture The ordinary Bachelor Degree and Integrated Masters in Architecture (A0) to be offered in KIST is a six year professional degree full time program.The mission of the this programme is attuned to the mission of KIST, of anchoring fast national growth and development through a vibrant construction industry, by supplying sufficient well trained, creative, competent professional consultants, contractors, and technicians. ALIGNMENT WITH UNESCO AND COMMONWEALTH ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTS TRAINING GUIDELINES FOR ARCHITECTS AND THOSE OF OTHER RELATED PROFESSIONAL BODIES IS ALSO PRIORITISED. Specifically, in this degree training, this department undertakes to:
Teaching and learning Facilities 1. Design Studios: the department plans for every promotion a comfortable design studio, where the students pass their design allocated time. For first year such studio is available temporally in KIST I Building. 2. Laboratory infrastructure: The department plans to implement the ArchiCAD and AutoCAD laboratories in these coming years. The programme is at its early stage and all of needed facilities will be implemented step by step. |
Programme Content
The content of the program is allocated through the whole six years by years as follows: Year 1:Architectural Graphics I, Workshop Technology I, General Communication Skills (English/French), Solid Geometry, Physical Environment I, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry. Year 2:Architecture Design I, Materials Science, History of Architecture I, Surveying, Year 3:Computer Programming, Building Technology I, Building Economics I, Landscape Year 4:Cultural Ecology & Design determinism, Urban and Regional Planning, Computer Year 5:Entrepreneurship, Architectural Conservation, Environment Impact Assessment, Year 6:Research Thesis Project, Design Project Programming, Design Thesis. Admission requirements Candidates for admission to the programme will normally be expected to satisfy the general admission requirements of the Institute as specified in the KIST and School common academic regulations. Eligible candidates must have passed in the Rwandan Senior school level or other equivalent finishing examinations, after no less than 12 years of primary and secondary school learning,, and attained a minimum grade B+ in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. These candidates must also have obtained a minimum B+ grade in any one of the following seven (7) subjects: Art, Design, Drawing, Construction, History, Civics, and Geography. Government sponsored students are selected by the Rwanda National Examinations Council, from amongst students who have satisfactory performance in their A-level examinations in the Mathematics-Physics combination. Privately sponsored students who performed well in Math and Physics at A-level may also be considered for admission, depending on availability of places.
The Bachelor of Architecture programme seeks to promote a broad and comprehensive course of study without compromising the specific technical education needed to produce great yet locally appropriate architecture. Students will be prepared and educated to help advance the ever-evolving field of architecture and related disciplines by emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, self-directed study, and inter-disciplinary skills through a host of courses ranging from design studios, sustainability analyses, building technology, and professional practice. The Architecture Department actively encourages the participation and collaboration with other disciplines, the profession, and the community at large. Through a rigorous and demanding program of research and design work supported by myraid workshops, public lectures, and academic investigations, the programme promotes the idea of archtiecture as more than just building, but as a bona fide social service which can help shape the future of Rwanda, East Africa, and the world. By turning it's focus outward to the greater world rather than inward to academia, the programme ensures that graduates are well-versed in a large variety of issues they are likely to encounter in practice.
