Bachelor of Architecture

 The ordinary Bachelor Degree and Integrated Masters in Architecture (A0) to be offered in KIST is a six year professional degree full time program.The mission of the this programme is attuned to the mission of KIST, of anchoring fast national growth and development through a vibrant construction industry, by supplying sufficient well trained, creative, competent professional consultants, contractors, and technicians. ALIGNMENT WITH UNESCO AND COMMONWEALTH ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTS TRAINING GUIDELINES FOR ARCHITECTS AND THOSE OF OTHER RELATED PROFESSIONAL BODIES IS ALSO PRIORITISED. Specifically, in this degree training, this department undertakes to:

  1. To advance desired positive, stable social and environmental transformation, in keeping with the ideals of vision 2020, through the education of Bachelors in Architecture degree students, with a distinctive practical professional and creative flavour and the expected ripple effects in the process they subsequently guide, of building design led national development.
  2. To contribute to the expansion of the knowledge of Architectural design through programs of analytical, basic, evaluation, behavioural, and applied or basic (pure) research, as well as in other creative inquiry based ventures.
  3. To use the specialised professional abilities of faculty in the Department to give guidance on national Building Design undertakings as the nation pursues its vision 2020, and to favourably project the Rwandese experience on the regional and international scenes.
  4. To produce graduates with the apposite professional and design inclinations for leadership and registration as practicing professionals following the set path of induction, examination and certification on graduation.
  5. To fashion minds that are strong in inquiry and self-guided learning, who then remain firmly on a life-long course of continuous self improvement through self-directed learning, and are able easily adapt to and provide solutions needed in a fast changing world.

Teaching and learning Facilities

1. Design Studios: the department plans for every promotion a comfortable design studio, where the students pass their design allocated time. For first year such studio is available temporally in KIST I Building.

2. Laboratory infrastructure: The department plans to implement the ArchiCAD and AutoCAD laboratories in these coming years. The programme is at its early stage and all of needed facilities will be implemented step by step.

Year 1:Architectural Graphics I, Workshop Technology I, General Communication Skills (English/French), Solid Geometry, Physical Environment I, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry.

Year 2:Architecture Design I, Materials Science, History of Architecture I, Surveying,
International Computer Driving license, Specific Communication Skills, Structures I, Economics for Designers, Industrial attachment I, Physical Environment II.

Year 3:Computer Programming, Building Technology I, Building Economics I, Landscape
Design, Building Environmental Science I

Year 4:Cultural Ecology & Design determinism, Urban and Regional Planning, Computer
Aided Design (CAD), Urban Design.

Year 5:Entrepreneurship, Architectural Conservation, Environment Impact Assessment,
Architectural Management I, Building Law and Regulations I, Statistics for
Behavioral Research, Human Settlements, Environmental Audit (EA), Research Methodology.

Year 6:Research Thesis Project, Design Project Programming, Design Thesis.

Admission requirements

Candidates for admission to the programme will normally be expected to satisfy the general admission requirements of the Institute as specified in the KIST and School common academic regulations. Eligible candidates must have passed in the Rwandan Senior school level or other equivalent finishing examinations, after no less than 12 years of primary and secondary school learning,, and attained a minimum grade B+ in the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.

These candidates must also have obtained a minimum B+ grade in any one of the following seven (7) subjects: Art, Design, Drawing, Construction, History, Civics, and Geography.

Government sponsored students are selected by the Rwanda National Examinations Council, from amongst students who have satisfactory performance in their A-level examinations in the Mathematics-Physics combination. Privately sponsored students who performed well in Math and Physics at A-level may also be considered for admission, depending on availability of places.
