KIST established the Centre for Innovation and Technology Transfer
(CITT) in 2002. An invaluable dimension of the centre is the prominence
of applied research leading to environmentally friendly appropriate
technology innovations and subsequent transfer to the market place,
particularly among the peri-urban and rural communities. The establishment
of CITT was made possible by the funding from DFID and the Government
of Rwanda. The centre is located at KIST Remera campus, opposite
the National Examination Centre.
The centre consists of four departments which are:
- The department of Research and Innovations (RI) charged
with research and innovation,
- The department of Technology Transfer and Training (TTT)
charged with the transfer of these appropriate technologies,
through its sub units known as Satellite Centers (SC), one
located in the Eastern Province (liaison office is in Nyagatare
district), another one in the Northern province (liaison
office in Musanze district).
|
- The department of Project Development (PD)
- The department of Private Sector Development (PSD) with its
sub-units of Technology and Business Incubation Facility (TBIF)
and KIST Enterprise Development Fund (KEDF) charged with commercialization,
training and dissemination of appropriate technologies to the
communities.
Through CITT’s seven years of existence, the centre has been
able to develop and disseminate a number of technologies of which
two have won international awards (Ashden awards both for Biogas
Project and Bread oven).
Vision:
To be a centre of excellence for innovation, research, development
and transfer of appropriate technologies, focusing on rural and
peri-urban communities and equality of opportunities in Rwanda.
Mission Statement:
To develop appropriate technological innovations, ensuring their
sustainable adaptation, and enhance the capacity of the private
sector to multiply the technologies.
Objective:
To spearhead transformation of the social economic conditions of
the Rwandan rural and peri-urban communities through increased application/utilization
of appropriate technologies developed by CITT and other similar
institutions.
CITT ACHIEVEMENTS
Waste water management and production of Biogas
This has been carried out in schools, households and prison establishment
and has led to tremendous saving on fuel wood consumption, hence
minimizing deforestation and arresting creeping desertification.
Energy saving
Fuel efficient community cook stoves
These have addressed the problem of an acute shortage of fuel energy
for cooking in institutions with many people and households. Other
energy saving technologies have also been developed in areas like:
home solar system, kerosene shower, bread oven, household fuel saving
cook stoves,etc..
Low cost housing
This has addressed a high cost in construction of houses in Rwanda
especially low income earners like estates (Imidugudu).
Other Technologies Developed by CITT
- Rainwater harvesting and storage
- Food storage (Storage bin, Maize storage crib)
- Agriculture technologies (Treadle pump, Maize sheller, Rice thresher,
potato peeler, tomato pulper, etc…)
- Water supply ( hand pump used to draw water from underground tanks)
Capacity Building
- Training on Biogas plants construction.
- Training on environmental conservation through urns (Rondereza
cook stoves) construction in households.
- Training women’s associations in food processing technologies
and business skills
