FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE
AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Who are we?
The Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design (FAED)
was established in 2009 at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology
(KIST). KIST is committed to public benefit attained by the
learning, teaching, discussion and promotion of Architecture,
Creative Design, Construction Management and Estate Management
and Valuation, the four departments within the Faculty. The
Faculty seeks to be recognized as a leader within Africa and
beyond, in architectural, design and development education,
with graduates that lead the design dialogue in Rwanda, East
Africa, and worldwide.
Who are we looking for?
KIST is looking for dynamic and motivated professionals who
will teach in the newly established faculty which has a focus
on creating new paradigms of locally generated and sustainable
Architecture, Design and Development. The professionals must
have expertise in sustainable design and a commitment to capitalizing
on local materials and vernacular methodologies to create a
hybrid architectural and development approach that is at once
modern, sustainable and uniquely Rwandan.
Qualifications
- The successful candidates will hold a university degree/diploma
and Master's Degree from a professionally accredited program.
A PhD and professional registration where applicable will
be an advantage.
- A high level of practice, research and scholarly production
will be required in addition to excellence in teaching and
a successful candidate should show promise of making significant
contributions to the advancement of contemporary architecture,
design, or development.
- Demonstration of substantial professional experience in
practice is required.
- Fundraising, sponsorship and partnership management with
funding and academic partners will be an asset viewed favorably,
as the FAED seeks to be an income-generating unit, to supplement
KIST and government funding with a goal of positively contributing
to the overall life of the FAED and support of its students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- These are full-time appointments with responsibilities
for teaching, research and administration. The specific rank
(Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate
or Full Professor) of the successful candidate(s) will be
determined based on experience and qualifications.
- The successful candidates will be expected to teach courses
in their area of specialization as well as design studio.
- You will be expected to contribute to the program’s
curriculum development and pedagogical direction. You will
define, devise, deliver and maintain courses and events in
the Department and in FAED, including new and existing courses
and events.
- You will report directly to the Head of your Department,
and liaise with KIST and FAED administrative as well as academic
staff as needed.
- You will provide support and guidance to students in academic
and career development.
Academic Ranking and Remuneration
KIST wishes to recruit suitably qualified persons for full-time
Lecturers, Senior Lecturers or Professors in the FAED. The following
are the minimum requirements for the positions listed in the
table below, and salaries are determined based on these rankings:
Associate Professor/ Full Professor: Candidates
with PhD qualification in relevant area of research, with ten
years teaching experience in a recognized University at Senior
Lecturer level, appropriate number of good quality research
publications, experience in supervision of postgraduate students
and service to the academic and wider community are preferred.
However, candidates with Master degree in relevant area of research,
accompanied by ten years of satisfactory teaching experience
in a recognized University at Senior Lecturer level, appropriate
number of good quality research publications (or equivalent
portfolio) and service to the academic and wider community may
also be considered.
Senior Lecturer: Candidate with PhD qualification
in relevant area of research, with requisite teaching and research
experience are preferred. However, candidates with Masters Degree
in relevant area, excellent research and publication record,
with at least three years of teaching in a recognized University
at the rank of Lecturer or above can also be considered.
Lecturer: Candidates with PhD qualification
in relevant area of research are preferred. However, candidates
with Masters Degree in relevant area of research, in addition
to three years of teaching experience in a recognized University
at Assistant Lecturer level can also be considered. Further,
candidates with Masters Degree qualification should demonstrate
evidence of research capability.

by an updated curriculum vitae, certified copies of degrees
certificates, the names and contact information of two references,
and a portfolio and/or copies of pertinent research papers to
the KIST Rector, Professor Abraham Atta Ogwu. Review of applications
will begin in July 2010 and continue until the positions are
filled. Lastly, the selected candidates will be expected to
begin teaching in January 2011.
