It also aims to train
new entrepreneurs, already existing entrepreneurs in the
community giving special emphasis on meat safety while
handling along with additional new products that are not
processed in the country. It also aims to provide hands-on
training to the B.Sc., students in meat processing and
value addition.
It was in this regard that the two parties (KIST and UNIDO)
agreed to provide the necessary infrastructure to establish
a pilot plant as an initial project, which is rising into
a fully fledged “state-of-the-art” meat production
and training plant. KIST therefore provided the building
located at KIST Remera Campus, for the production unit
while UNIDO provided the machinery for meat processing.
By the end of September 2009 rehabilitation and installation
of all the essential machinery was complete. On the 8th
of October 2009 six staff members were allocated to the
meat processing pilot plant.
The meat processing plant has trained the staff in the
following: cuts of meat (beef, pork, lamb and chicken),
microbiological safety and hygiene in the handling of
meat at different stages of processing, processing of
several processed meat products, operation of the different
machinery, personal hygiene, waste treatment etc., .
PRODUCTS PRODUCED BY THE MEAT PROCESSING PLANT
1. Beef sausages.
2. Pork sausages.
3. Beef and Pork burgers.
4. Meat cuts.
