THE AWARD OF A QUALIFICATION, THE
AWARD WITH DISTINCTION AND HONOURS DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
Minimum requirements for
an award and the requirements for a Distinction
For the purposes for calculating an award below honours level
on undergraduate programmes a minimum mark of 50 percent must
be achieved in each course and on a postgraduate programme
a minimum mark of 60 percent. For the purposes of calculating
an award with distinction, all calculations shall be based
on a candidate's performance in their first attempt on all
courses. To be awarded a distinction a candidate must have
achieved a minimum mark of 80 percent in 60 percent of the
credit used for calculating the award. Where an award includes
a dissertation/project this must have been awarded a minimum
mark of 80 percent.
Distinction in the Certificate of Higher Education
A student can be awarded a Certificate of Higher Education
with 120 credit points of which a minimum of 120 must be at
RHE1.
The award “with Distinction” will be granted
on the basis of all 120-credit points.
Distinction in the Diploma of Higher Education
A student can be awarded a Diploma of Higher Education with
240 credit points of which a minimum of 120 must be at RHE2.
The award “with Distinction” will be granted
on the basis of the 120 SHE2-credit points.
Distinction in the Advanced Diploma of Higher Education
A student can be awarded an Advanced Diploma of Education
with 300 credit points of which a minimum of 60 must be at
RHE3.
The award “with Distinction” will be granted
on the basis of the 60 credit points at RHE3 and the 60 best
at RHE2
Distinction in the Bachelors Degree
A student can be awarded a Bachelors degree with 360 credit
points of which a minimum of 120 must be at RHE4.
The award “with Distinction” will be granted
on the basis of the best 120 RHE34-credit points.
Distinction in the Postgraduate Certificate
A student can be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate with
60 credits of which 40 are at a
minimum of RHEM. The award “with distinction”
will be granted on the basis of all 60-
credit points.
Distinction in the Postgraduate Diploma
A student can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma with 120
credits of which 90 are at a minimum of RHEM. The award “with
distinction” will be granted on the basis of all 120-credit
points.
Distinction in the Masters Degree
A student can be awarded a Masters Degree with 180 credits
of which at least 140 are at SHE6. The award “with distinction”
will be granted on the basis of all 180-credit points.
Distinction in a Masters Degree (following an integrated
programme from undergraduate to masters level study)
A student can be awarded such a degree with 600 credits
of which a minimum of 120-credit points must be at RHE6. The
award with distinction will be on the basis of the 120-RHE6
credit points.
Distinction on a taught MPhil Degree
A student can be awarded a taught MPhil with 240 credits
with at least 200 at RHE6. The award “with distinction”
will be granted on the basis of all 180-credit points.
Distinction in CPD awards
The award with distinction will be granted on the basis
of the 20 credits points awarded.
2 Honours Degree Classification
- Under the terms of the Institute Qualifications framework,
a student can be awarded a Bachelors degree with Honours
with 480 credit points of which a minimum of 120 must be
at RHE5 and 60 at RHE4. The award “with honours”
will be granted on the basis of the 180-RHE5 and RHE4-credits.
- For the purposes of Honours classification, where a student
has been permitted to re-enter courses at Level RHE4 or
RHE5 a subsequent pass mark will be deemed to be capped
at 50%.
- First Class Honours will be awarded to a candidate who
has achieved a mark of at least 70 percent in 80 percent
of courses at levels 4 and 5 including the dissertation/project
and no mark lower than 60 percent.
- Second Class Honours, Upper Division will be awarded
to a candidate who has achieved a mark of at least 70 percent
in 60 percent of the courses at levels 4 and 5 including
the dissertation and no mark lower than 50 percent.
- Second Class Honours, Lower Division will be awarded
to a candidate who has achieved a mark of at least 60 percent
in 60 percent of the courses at levels 4 and 5 including
the dissertation and no mark lower than 50 percent.
Third Class honours will be awarded to a candidate who
achieves a minimum mark of 50 percent in all courses at levels
4 and 5 including the dissertation. A candidate may be considered
for the award of a 3 rd Class Honours Degree if they have
marginally fails (a mark between 45 and 49%) in up to two
courses provided they have achieved at least 50 percent for
the dissertation.
