On 27th October 2009 , it was a full house attendance
in MUHABURA Auditorium as KIST conducted a one day career
guidance meeting with Secondary School leavers who aspire
to join the Prestigious KIST during the next academic
year 2010.
During the meeting students got first hand information
from KIST Staff who included Deans, Directors and other
Staff from various Departments and Directorates. Soft
drinks were freely served to all participants, the meeting
was very informative and every student seemed too eager
as to when that day will come that he/she sits in a KIST
Classroom.
Annually, thousands of students complete their Senior 6 and
have to make decisions about what they will study at University.
Usually their choices are based on the popularity of careers,
parents’ wishes; subjects followed by their friends, even
some students are pressured by their family to follow specific
careers, etc. Moreover, students are not aware of all existing
academic programmes.
The selection process is usually challenging because students
do not tap into their strengths and/ or weakness in making their
choices.
The main aim of the day was to help students make constructive,
informed personal decisions about their course of study leading
to individual career development by means of helping them understand
their interests, educational background, job opportunities,
core values and future subject in relation to their desired
career choices.
The presentations were about KIST academic programmes and the
process of career path decision-making. The Presenters emphasized
on course contents for each department, admission requirements,
interests, job opportunities after graduation, core values or
personal qualities, obstacles that may hinder right choice process
etc. Such topics help students determine their strengths and
weakness.
After presentations and various questions for clarification,
students made their informed choices by filling course selection
forms.
